3. Your Browser's Local Storage

We use your browser's localStorage and Indexed Database to locally save your preferences, such as:

  • Your theme choice (light or dark mode)
  • Your bookmarked stories

This data is stored only on your device and is never sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data will remove it.

4. Push Notifications (OneSignal)

If you enable push notifications, we use OneSignal to send you notifications about top stories. OneSignal may use cookies and similar technologies to:

  • Store a unique identifier to recognize your device
  • Deliver and measure the effectiveness of notifications
  • Enable opt-in and opt-out functionality

Important: Push notifications are only enabled after you explicitly opt-in through the Settings modal. We do not send any push notifications until you have accepted the cookie notice and enabled notifications in your settings.

You can disable push notifications at any time by toggling them off in the Settings modal or by using your browser's notification settings.

5. hn30 Daily Dispatch Newsletter

If you subscribe to our free hn30 Daily Dispatch email newsletter, we collect and process your email address so we can send you a daily digest of the top 30 Hacker News stories.

Sign-up is handled through Mailjet, our email service provider. We use a double opt-in process: after you submit the subscription form, Mailjet sends you a confirmation email. Your address is added to our mailing list only after you click the confirmation link in that email.

Each newsletter may include:

  • Story titles and links from the current top 30 on Hacker News
  • Short AI-generated descriptions of some articles (see OpenRouter below)
  • A link to read the edition in your browser at hn30.eu/digest
  • An unsubscribe link in every email

Legal basis: We send the newsletter based on your consent, which you give when you confirm your subscription via the double opt-in email.

Unsubscribe: You can stop receiving the newsletter at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us (see Contact Us below).

We do not sell your email address. Mailjet stores your subscription status and processes emails on our behalf as a data processor.

How We Handle Third-Party Services

  • AI Summaries (OpenRouter): When you request an on-site TL;DR summary, the content of the article is sent to the OpenRouter API, which routes requests to various AI models. We do not send any personal information about you to OpenRouter or the underlying AI providers.
  • Newsletter descriptions (OpenRouter): When we prepare the hn30 Daily Dispatch, we may send publicly available article text to OpenRouter to generate short one- or two-sentence descriptions for some stories. These descriptions are stored on our servers and reused in later editions when the same story appears again. No subscriber email addresses or other personal data are sent to OpenRouter for this purpose.
  • Email newsletter (Mailjet): If you subscribe to the hn30 Daily Dispatch, your email address and subscription status are stored and processed by Mailjet to deliver emails, manage your list membership, and handle confirmations and unsubscribes. Mailjet may process data in the EU and/or other countries where it operates. See Mailjet's privacy policy for details.
  • Push Notifications (OneSignal): OneSignal is only loaded and initialized after you accept the cookie notice. Your device token is sent to OneSignal's servers to deliver push notifications. We do not share any other personal data with OneSignal.
